Varicocele Embolization: Non-Surgical Treatment Options

Varicocele embolization offers a minimally invasive alternative to surgery for treating enlarged scrotal veins that may affect fertility.

What is Varicocele Embolization?

Varicocele embolization is a minimally invasive, image-guided procedure used to treat varicoceles — enlarged veins in the scrotum that can cause pain, swelling, and fertility problems. It’s performed by an interventional radiologist as an alternative to traditional surgical repair (varicocelectomy).

How the Procedure Works

During varicocele embolization, the interventional radiologist inserts a small catheter through a tiny puncture in the groin or neck. Using real-time X-ray guidance, the catheter is navigated to the enlarged testicular vein. Small coils or a special solution are then placed to block blood flow in the abnormal vein, redirecting blood through healthy veins.

Benefits Over Surgery

  • No incision — just a tiny skin puncture
  • No general anesthesia — performed under conscious sedation
  • Outpatient procedure — go home the same day
  • Faster recovery — return to normal activities in 1-2 days
  • Lower recurrence rate — the embolization approach has lower recurrence rates than some surgical techniques
  • Bilateral treatment — both sides can be treated in a single procedure

Recovery

Most patients experience mild discomfort for 1-2 days after the procedure. You can typically return to desk work the next day and resume physical activity within a week. Pain medication is rarely needed beyond over-the-counter options.

Impact on Fertility

Studies show that varicocele treatment can improve sperm parameters in many men. If fertility is a concern, discuss timing and expectations with both your urologist and interventional radiologist.
